Architecture Meets Pedagogy

Exhibition “A Place to Learn: School as a Living Environment” at the AIT Architecture Salon Hamburg

What does a good building for learning look like? This question is at the heart of the exhibition “A Place to Learn: School as a Living Environment – Architecture Meets Pedagogy,” on view at the AIT Architecture Salon Hamburg through May 29, 2026. The exhibition presents exemplary school building projects from Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany that combine innovative educational concepts with contemporary architecture.

Trapez Architektur is represented with two projects: the Römerstadtschule in Frankfurt am Main and the Bünningstedt Primary School in Ammersbek. Both projects exemplify a new generation of school buildings that rethink how learning is organized spatially—through open learning environments, cluster-based models, and differentiated areas for interaction and retreat.

As co-curator, Dirk Landwehr contributed to shaping the exhibition’s content, bringing in his expertise in educational architecture and participatory planning processes. He also took part in the panel discussion at the opening, addressing current developments in school design. Key topics included the role of participation, new pedagogical approaches, and the influence of architecture on learning processes.

The exhibition highlights how closely architecture and pedagogy are intertwined – and the contribution that well-designed learning environments can make to the development of schools as places to live and learn.

We would like to thank the curators and all participants for the inspiring collaboration and professional exchange.
