The buildings of the Oceanographic Museum, located on the grounds of the former Dominican monastery in Stralsund’s historic old town, are characterized by the architectural heterogeneity that has developed over eight centuries — a rich spatial diversity and density shaped by time.

The proposed design takes up this layered history and architectural variety, enhancing the dynamic sequence of spatial experiences. It adds new volumes, reorganizes existing spaces, and stages each room in a distinctive way. A newly designed circulation route connects all existing and new areas, guiding visitors through the multifaceted history of the site - from the ground floor level down into the underwater world and back up again.

The new architectural language draws inspiration from the maritime theme, evoking associations of water, drops, and waves. Circles and spirals, already present in the existing structure, appear throughout the museum as a unifying motif. A sensitive approach to the historic fabric, carefully considered interventions, and a respectful distance from the church define the core of the design. The materials and roof forms of the new structures reference the surrounding medieval buildings, integrating the additions harmoniously into the historic ensemble.
